Construction Management Awards and Scholarships

The CM program has reached an agreement with a local real estate developer for a scholarship that provides an apartment for the selected student(s). The three (3) bedroom apartment is in a newer apartment complex in Pullman. The scholarship will be awarded to a minimum of two (2) and a maximum of three (3) second year, certified CM students (regardless of gender, ethnicity or religion) and will be based upon financial need. This apartment scholarship is for one year only and cannot be renewed. This apartment is only designated for a maximum of three (3) CM students, or a CM student with a legally recognized partner, and cannot be sub-leased, rented or loaned to any others during the time the CM student(s) has/have obtained the apartment under this scholarship. In the event that the finalists are a male and female the scholarship will be awarded to the most deserving finalist(s).

The Inland Group has established a generous endowment to support students in the CM program via scholarships. This endowment will fund a scholarship of approximately $2,000 per year. This scholarship is for one year only but students who receive the scholarship can re-apply for this award the following year – if it is available. Students will NOT be awarded the entire amount in a single semester but will be awarded half of the scholarship value in the fall semester and the remainder in the spring semester. The Inland Group (a Spokane based company) specializes in high-density residential development, construction, and management across the western and mid-western states. With over 30 years of proven experience, including numerous WSU Construction Management graduates, they continue to build value for their residents and clients.

Mortenson and the Nowoj family have established a generous endowment to support students in the CM program via scholarships. This endowment will fund one scholarship per year. Students will NOT be awarded the entire amount in a single semester but will be awarded half of the scholarship value in the fall semester and the remainder in the spring semester. In the event that multiple finalists are identified, the scholarship will be awarded to the most deserving finalist.

It is with great honor to offer a scholarship in memory of John Nowoj. John was a 1985 WSU graduate, with a degree in Construction Management. He started working in construction at a young age as a hod carrier for his father’s masonry contracting business. After college he began his 35-year career at Mortenson, where he finished as a Senior Vice President. John was an inspiration to those around him, encouraging and guiding teams to push beyond the boundaries of what is possible. John had a deep seeded passion for building and loved every aspect of construction. He took particular interest and held in high regard craft workers and made a point of connecting and showing his appreciation whenever he visited a project site. John was able to strike a rare balance of actively caring for those he worked with and always doing and empowering others to do the right thing, with a passion and determination for negotiation and strategic vision that made him a successful and well-respected leader. John was a dedicated husband and father whose devotion and love for his family was closely matched with his passion for building.

JTM Construction has provided a generous gift to support students in the CM program via scholarships. This gift will fund two (2) scholarships at approximately $2,500 per year. Students will NOT be awarded the entire amount in a single semester but will be awarded half of the scholarship value in the fall semester and the remainder in the spring semester. JTM Construction is a general contractor with both a strong WSU alumni presence and commitment to comradery, who aims to provide the Coug community with equitable opportunities in the Construction industry.

The CM program has received a generous scholarship donation of over $25,000 that will provide an annual scholarship of $5,000 through the 2025/2026 academic year. The scholarship will be awarded to a second or third year CM student (regardless of gender, ethnicity or religion) and will be based upon financial need with preference being given to students who are residents of the state of Washington.  This scholarship is for one year only but students who receive the scholarship can re-apply for this award the following year – if it is available.  And, to clarify, students will NOT be awarded the entire amount in a single semester.  As such, students will be awarded $2,500 in the fall semester and $2,500 in the spring semester.  In the event that multiple finalists are identified, the scholarship will be awarded to the most deserving finalist.

Inspired by the need to support underrepresented individuals in the construction industry and the impact of the COVID-19 global pandemic, Schuchart Corporation has established a scholarship. The Schuchart Construction Management Diversity Equity and Inclusion Scholarship shall be used to fund two (2) scholarships at approximately $2,500 each. Students will NOT be awarded the entire amount in a single semester but will be awarded half of the scholarship value in the fall semester and the remainder in the spring semester. The scholarships will be awarded to a qualified and admitted CM student.

The Sellen Community Foundation has established a scholarship in the CM program. The Sellen Community Foundation Scholarship shall be used to fund four (4) scholarships at approximately $2,500 each. Students will NOT be awarded the entire amount in a single semester but will be awarded half of the scholarship value in the fall semester and the remainder in the spring semester. The scholarships will be awarded to a qualified and admitted CM student.

The CM program has received a generous scholarship donation of $10,000 to be split between two scholarships of $5,000 each.  The scholarships will be awarded to a second and/or third year CM student (regardless of gender, ethnicity or religion) and will be based upon financial need with preference being given to students who are residents of the state of Washington.  This scholarship is for one year only but students who receive the scholarship can re-apply for this award during the spring semester as well – if it is available.  In the event that the multiple finalists are identified, the scholarship will be awarded to the most deserving finalist(s).

Venture General Contracting has provided a generous gift to support students in the CM program via scholarships. This gift will fund two (2) scholarships at $5,000 per year. Students will NOT be awarded the entire amount in a single semester but will be awarded half of the scholarship value in the fall semester and the remainder in the spring semester. The scholarships will be awarded to an admitted CM student in their 3^rd or 4^th year in the program (regardless of gender, ethnicity, or religion).  Preference will be given to students who demonstrate attributes of strong personal character, a persevering work ethic, and a passion for personal growth along with demonstrated financial need.

Prime Electric has established a generous and sizeable endowment to support students in the CM program via scholarships. This endowment will fund a scholarship of approximately $2,500 per year. This scholarship is for one year but students who receive the scholarship can re-apply for this award the following year – if it is available. Students will not be awarded the entire amount in a single semester but will be awarded half o the scholarship value in the fall semester and the remainder in the spring semester. In the event that multiple finalists are identified, the scholarship will be awarded to the most deserving finalist. It is PRIME’s preference that this scholarship will be given to the most deserving candidate, with preference given to students who demonstrate strong work ethic, determination toward achieving goals, solid academic performance, and who have an interest in a career with an electrical specialty contractor.

Ted and Shelly Vanderheyden have established a generous endowment to support students in the CM program via scholarships. This endowment will fund a scholarship of approximately $2,000 per year. This scholarship is for one year but students who receive the scholarship can re-apply for this award the following year – if it is available. Students will not be awarded the entire amount in a single semester but will be awarded half o the scholarship value in the fall semester and the remainder in the spring semester. In the event that multiple finalists are identified, the scholarship will be awarded to the most deserving finalist. The scholarship will be awarded to a Construction Management student who demonstrates a financial need to continue their education in the Construction Management program. It is the donor’s preference that the recipient demonstrates excellent morals, work ethic, and high merit. The donor also prefers the recipient be involved in the community and enjoy other interests outside of academics.

Ted and Shelley both graduated from WSU, Ted in Mechanical Engineering and Shelley in Pharmacy. Shelley’s father, Paul Sunich, earned a degree in Construction Technology through the College of Business (now known as Construction Management in the Voiland College of Engineering and Architecture). Her mother, Betsy, also attended WSU. Paul enjoyed a successful career as a builder of homes and apartments. This family of Coug’s also includes Shelley’s brother, Steve, who graduated in Construction Management and his wife Lori, who is a proud adopted Coug. Ted and Shelley desire to join and continue Paul’s tradition of donating to and support of the Construction Management program and to memorialize and honor Paul who passed away in March 2023.
