Professor Phil Gruen has been featured in the summer issue of Washington State Magazine for his work with Washington’s Classic Buildings for the Society of Architectural Historians Archipedia Project. Along with Tri-Cities faculty member Robert Franklin, Phil has produced and continues to supplement this significant archival and encyclopedic service to the State and University. They focus on both canonical Washington buildings (contemporary and historical) and vernacular landscapes and infrastructure.
“In my view, almost everything is significant—if you’re willing to work hard enough to talk to the people, to do the research, to dig up the archives, and to understand that the built environment is more than just famous old buildings designed by old white men. Looking at sites that way, I think, is a type of social justice architecture.” ―Phil Gruen
