The Rural Communities Design Initiative (RCDI) is a program that provides community based outreach learning to students in the SDC. Each year faculty leading the RCDI select from a series of community based projects to provide design and planning ideas to city leaders and citizens. This program expands the land grant mission of WSU. Students who participate in this program gain experience working with communities and government leaders in understanding the unique issues of rural communities. The studio organizes community “Charettes” where citizen ideas are revealed from which students then develop proposals. Often student proposals form the basis for communities to seek grant funding for implementation of projects.
