Dear SDC Students, Colleagues, Alumni, Prospective Students, Friends, and Community Members:
We are excitedly preparing for the beginning of the 2016-17 academic year, and no doubt expect it will be another great year! Some things of note:
Faculty, Students and Curriculum
We begin the semester by saying thank and goodbye to Cheryl Scott, who will be leaving us following three years as our administrative manager. Cheryl’s last official workday at WSU is Friday, August 12. Read more about Cheryl’s accomplishments at WSU as well as her future plans here.
We are also excited to welcome some new faces to the faculty and staff of the School of Design and Construction. Hope Rising is joining our ever-growing ranks of tenure-track faculty; she is beginning her appointment in Landscape Architecture this fall. Hope arrives from Penn State University, where she was teaching last year as a visiting assistant professor. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Oregon, an MLA and MUP from the University of Michigan, and several years of professional experience as a landscape architect.
Carrie Johnson is assuming the post of administrative manager beginning August 1. Carrie is joining us from the CAHNRS Business and Finance Office following a stint with WSU Central Stores and many years managing her own company. Carrie is a dedicated Coug and a WSU graduate (with a B.A. in Business Administration). Please welcome Hope and Carrie to our SDC family!
SDC and Advisory Board Initiatives
Physical changes have continued around Carpenter Hall over this summer. The first floor has been painted, and new and re-designed furniture, display areas, and spatial configurations have been added. As the semester progresses, we are looking forward to some new designs, spaces, and shows on the first floor. We think the changes will create a more open and welcoming environment for the SDC—and the WSU community.
Our future SDC Virtual Laboratory in Carpenter Hall Room 412 is also taking shape, thanks in large part to interior design program head Matt Melcher’s coordination efforts and generous donations from our advisory board members. The room has been painted, carpet has been laid, and furniture has been delivered. We expect this to be first-class space that will enhance our professional outreach as well as improve recruitment and retention for all our programs. We would like to have it fully operational in time for the beginning of spring semester 2017, and we will determine usage and availability at that time.
The Solar Decathlon project continues to proceed; lead faculty member Darrin Griechen has hired project leads for design and communications, and has been working with students to finalize the conceptual design this summer. In-kind donations are still needed; Devon Anderson is the principal contact at this time.
With the school year around the corner the SDC is getting geared up for several activities.
Among these include the SDC Week of Welcome Freshmen and Transfer Student Orientation (Thursday, August 18, from 2:30-3:30 in Carpenter Hall 102) and the All-School Welcome and Student Club BBQ (scheduled for Friday, August, 26, beginning at 4pm right outside of Carpenter Hall).
The invited guest lecture series and gallery shows for fall are getting closer to completion; study tour week will be Oct. 2-9 (students will be heading to New York and Seattle); and a group of students and faculty will be heading to the DBIA conference in Las Vegas from November 2-4. We will provide more information about these happenings at a later time.
