Architectural Studies

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The architecture program at Washington State University is dedicated to the education of future architects who are intellectually aware and who critically understand social, political, and global conditions that influence our built environment. We provide a comprehensive education in design, history and theory, technology, and practice. Graduates communicate effectively and work equitably with allied professionals and project stakeholders and communities- they understand and value what others bring to a project. Graduates can skillfully integrate multiple factors through collaborative “design thinking” and innovative performance-based design modeling.

The Bachelor of Science in Architectural Studies (BS Arch Studies) provides a foundation in architecture, particularly for those who anticipate continuing their professional education through accredited graduate programs, or who may choose to work in architecture and/or related fields. The Master of Architecture (M. Arch) degree is fully accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB). Completion of this degree satisfies the educational requirement of the pathway to architectural licensure in all U.S. jurisdictions. The curricular emphasis of our M. CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

Employers value and hire WSU graduates. Our architecture degrees provide a crucial foundation for architecture licensure and employment in architecture. Career opportunities range from Entry-Level Intern, Designer, Project Manager, and Partner in small and large firms serving a wide range of market sectors in urban and rural settings across the globe such as residential, education, retail, commercial, healthcare, and adaptive re-use. Similarly, architects provide allied services in the industry with Interior Design, Landscape Architecture, Construction Management, Engineering, and with community planning and development professions, as specialists in digital design and fabrication, in sustainability and project performance, and in building systems and materials science in the private sector, and with non-profit organizations, and government organizations.

Both the undergraduate degree and the graduate degree in architecture at the School of Design and Construction provide curricular and extra-curricular experiences that prepare students for lifelong careers and lifelong learning to advance social and ecological well-being in our communities, cities, and sustain the natural environment. Career mentoring and preparation services are offered throughout the architecture program and through the Voiland College of Engineering and Architecture’s Internships and Career Services office. Involvement with the American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS) chapter and other student clubs provides students opportunities to engage in community service projects, support school functions, create school events, and participate in national conferences and events. To earn a license and become an architect, students document architecture practice related experiences through the Architectural Experience Program® (AXP®). The architecture program integrates the experiences in helpful ways through practicum options. Developed by NCARB and required by most U.S. licensing boards, the AXP framework guides students through the steps to earning and reporting professional experience.
